While it can be tempting to plant summer crops early in hopes of getting a head start, it’s important to understand the ideal season for each vegetable. Planting at the right time gives your garden the best chance to flourish. The calendar below follows USDA Zone 6a guidelines to help you plant each crop in its optimal season.

Popular Cool Weather Veggies
Not all vegetables love the heat. In fact, many popular varieties thrive in cooler conditions and can be planted as early as March. Cooler temperatures means fewer pests to worry about – one of the benefits of cool weather crops. Just keep an eye on the forecast, as a sudden drop below freezing may require a bit of protection to keep your plants safe.

Popular Warm Weather Veggies
Warm season vegetables planted too early generally tend to be stunted from the cooler weather, or otherwise suffer from frost. Even if the weather seems like it’s going to be nice and perfect for growing, nighttime temperatures can be cooler than desired, and there can be late season frosts and even snow storms in April! Likewise, planting fall crops too early can result in stressed seedlings that may die from extreme summer heat.
