The Firefly Petunia

After more than 20 years of reasearch and development, a company called Bio Light has created the first glow-in-the-dark plant; a white petunia.

Let’s be clear– We’re all curious. Even skeptical. But it’s true.  Not only does the firefly petunia emit a soft glow in the evening, it’s accompanied by a sweet fragrance.

As of 4/24, we have a small number of Firefly Petunias still available in stores. We anticipate our farm will have more ready next week.

How much does it cost?

A 5″ pot is $34.99

Where can I buy one?

Only in our stores.

All three of our locations will carry them. If you’re making a special trip just for the Firefly Petunia, we recommend you call ahead for exact inventory. Supplies are limited.

Common Questions

One of our employees took one home and has reported back with answers to a lot of our questions.

What parts glow?

The flowers! The company who engineered the Firefly Petunia says the foliage glows too, but our employee said it wasn’t noticeable. (Maybe because of all the brightly glowing blooms?)

How bright does it glow?

It depends. The emerging buds and newest flowers glow brightest. As the blooms age, they grow more dim but they still look great in daylight.

What special care will it need?

Our expert growers at our farm have been working with them for a couple months now. They’ve found they look best with a routine pruning (unlike the petunias you may be used to) and fertilizing. They will do best with 6-8 hrs of direct sunlight each day.

Is it a houseplant?

No, this plant won’t thrive if grown indoors. If you’re determined to try it, we strongly recommend using a grow light.

When does it glow?

Evenings. When our employee first got it home and immediately brought it into a black room, it didn’t glow… at all! As dust approached, the petunia’s bioluminescence began to kick in. On another day, the petunia had a very faint glow when taken into a black room around lunchtime. Evening is definitely when this flower glows brightest.

How many will I need if I want it to spill out of a hanging basket, like those at the Plaza?

None. This is an old-fashioned petunia grown from seed, which is not well suited for the “cascade out of a pot” kind of look. (If that’s what you’re going for, stick with the other tried and true petunia varieties.)

What should I plant with my Firefly™ Petunia?

Senecios, with their white leaves (like Dusty Miller and Angel Wings) will help reflect the glow of the petunias. Add daytime color with other flowers or stick with the all-white theme.

If I buy a Firefly Petunia and don’t like it, can I get my money back?

Our standard return policy applies: Plants may be returned within 24 hours if in re-sellable condition.
