GROW FRESH GREENS INDOORS
By Kim Dyer | February 6, 2026
By the time fall fades into winter, even the most devoted gardeners are ready for a short rest. The holidays come and go… and then that familiar urge returns – the desire to grow something.
If you’re looking to grow microgreens indoors this winter, sprouts and microgreens are a simple and rewarding place to start. They’re easy, fast, and a fresh reminder that the growing season never truly stops.

Sprouts: Fresh & Soil-Free
Sprouts are grown from larger seeds and don’t require soil at all. A simple jar with a screen lid or a dedicated sprouting tray is all you need.
Place your seeds in bright, indirect light, rinse twice daily, and within just a few days you’ll see tender shoots emerging. Harvest them at whatever stage you prefer.
Start with high-quality sprouting seeds like alfalfa, broccoli, or mung beans for fast, flavorful results. Sprouts are known for their nutrient density and add incredible freshness to winter meals. Try layering them on sandwiches instead of lettuce, tossing them into salads, or sprinkling them over soups for a bright finish.
Microgreens: Growing Fresh Greens Indoors
Microgreens are grown from smaller seeds that thrive in shallow trays filled with seed-starting mix.
After gently watering, cover and place in a bright location. Within days, delicate greens begin to grow. When they reach a few inches tall, simply snip and enjoy.
Peas, radishes, beets, broccoli, and sunflowers all make excellent microgreens — tender, flavorful, and packed with nutrition in their earliest stage of growth. You’ll just need sturdy seed trays, and if natural light is limited, an indoor grow light to keep them thriving through winter.
After harvesting, lightly loosen the soil and sow again. A gentle solution of liquid plant fertilizer can refresh the mix and extend your growing cycle.
Grow Through the Winter
It may still be too early to start outdoor vegetable transplants, but sprouts and microgreens offer a meaningful way to keep growing, and eating fresh, all winter long. When you grow microgreens indoors, you’re bringing fresh flavor and a little spring energy into your home during the coldest months of the year.
You’ll find everything you need in our Seed Department, Garden Pharmacy, and at your nearest Suburban Lawn & Garden location. And if you haven’t stepped into one of our greenhouses lately, consider this your invitation. On a gray day, it’s a welcome oasis of green. On a sunny afternoon, it’s a warm reminder that spring is on its way.
There’s still winter ahead, but there’s always something growing at Suburban.
We’ll see you in the garden center.
Suburban Recommends
For best results, we recommend starting with quality Botanical Interests sprouting seeds or other trusted varieties from our Seed Department, pairing them with Espoma Organic Seed Starter Mix, and growing in sturdy seed starting trays with humidity domes. If natural light is limited, an indoor grow light system will keep your greens strong and vibrant. To extend your harvest cycle, a diluted solution of Espoma® Organic All Purpose Plant Food can refresh your soil and keep winter growth going.
