DEMYSTIFYING GMO CLAIMS IN GARDEN SEEDS
Gardeners often wonder whether the seeds they purchase are genetically modified. The short answer is no – all seed lines sold at Suburban Lawn & Garden are non-GMO, and in fact, all garden seeds available to home gardeners in the United States are non-GMO.
So where does the confusion come from, and what do “GMO” and “non-GMO” actually mean?

Understanding GMOs
GMO stands for genetically modified organism — a living organism whose DNA has been altered in a laboratory in ways that do not occur naturally. These modifications are made to enhance traits such as drought resistance, pest resistance, or improved yields.
Because GMO technology is expensive and tightly controlled, these seeds are patented and sold only to large commercial farms, not the general public. GMO seeds are typically used for large-scale crops like corn, soybeans, and canola—primarily for livestock feed and commercial food production.
While opinions vary on their long-term impact, one thing is certain:
GMO seeds are not available to home gardeners through any U.S. retailer.
Heirloom vs. Hybrid Seeds - What’s the Difference?
Once gardeners learn they aren’t buying GMO seeds, the next question is often about hybrids. How are hybrids different from genetically modified seeds?
Heirloom Seeds
Heirloom seeds are open-pollinated varieties passed down for generations. They produce plants that grow true to type, making them great for those who enjoy seed saving, unique flavors, and historical varieties.
Hybrid Seeds
Hybrid seeds are created by naturally crossing two varieties of the same plant species to highlight desirable traits—like improved vigor, disease resistance, or uniform fruit size. This breeding happens through traditional, natural processes, not in a lab.
Hybrids are completely natural, safe, and widely used by home gardeners and growers.
Why the Confusion?
Many gardeners assume “hybrid” means “genetically modified,” but the two are very different. Hybrids result from natural breeding methods, while GMOs require lab-based gene modification.
If a seed packet says “hybrid,” you can feel confident it is not genetically modified.
